The SA National Roads Agency has stopped the left lane of the N1 South at Botha Avenue in Centurion as a precautionary measure following the formation of a sinkhole over the weekend.

According to Sanral, the sinkhole formed as a result of recent heavy rainfall in Gauteng.

According to Sanral, a team of engineers and a normal road maintenance contractor are examining the situation in order to formulate and implement a mitigation strategy.

“We’ve also enlisted the help of geotechnical experts to help with the evaluation,” said Progress Hlahla, Sanral’s northern area manager.

Meanwhile, Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said the lane closure has hampered traffic flow, but they are monitoring the situation and anticipate the route to reopen shortly.
