The Federal Government is supporting the initiative for inter-modal transportation.
According to it, intermodal transportation can reduce congestion at the ports while jobs can be provided as well as a reduction in the cost of transportation.
This can also encourage the inflow of people and heavy duty vehicle to the ports.
Mr Rotimi Amaechi, who is transport minister said this at the 15th National Council on Transportation in Sokoto.
According to the minister, the government has plans to link all the seaports, airports and the various Inland Container Deports by rail.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Sabiu Zakari was present at the event on behalf of the minister and he said: “The development of intermodal transportation would reduce the cost of transportation, the influx of people and trucks to port cities thereby reducing congestion at the ports.
“It would also create jobs by the optimal utilization of the various modes, develop modern transport infrastructure as the need arises and extend the life of the already existing ones”
He said with the intermodal system, an alternative means to road system in the country can be provided.
The Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, was also represented at the event, by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, enjoined the federal government to extend the railway lines linking Kaura Namoda in Zamfara to Sokoto.
Aliyu, was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Bello, and he said the federal government should build an Inland Dry Port in Illela LGA to help boost the business activities the area is known for.
