Eldorado Park residents revealed their intention to picket outside the local police station until there is something done about the violence and crime in the area.

Residents claim 20 lives were taken in just three months

Residents who have been participating in the protest claim that around 20 people have been shot dead in alleged gang-related incidents in the past three months. Just before the weekend, Eldorado park residents staged a protest against the rising crime and violence in their area.

Residents blockaded the N12 with burning tyres and police officers were deployed to the area. Ward Councillor Dwain Ponsonby says that crime has escalated at an alarming rate in Eldorado Park.

Ward Councillor explains the increase in crime in the area

It has escalated to an alarming rate. Promises have been made with the presidential visit in 2015, in 2019, the same thing, nothing has changed. We’ve been sitting at the police station now, setting out demands for the last two weeks, and nobody has the audacity to pitch,” Ponsonby said.

SABC News reports that Ponsonby recalled a shooting that occurred while an official from Johannesburg’s mayor’s office was there.

We’re losing people daily, we actually had a visit the other day from an official from the mayor’s office, and whilst in discussion, a shooting happened, and he had first glance of going to the scene and seeing [of the incident] as well as the escalation of the shootings in Eldos,” said Ponsonby.
