Bukola Elemide popularly known as Asa is a Nigerian-French singer and songwriter. She was born on the 17th of September 1982 when her parents were working and studying cinematography in France. Her parents are Nigerians who hail from Itoku, Abeokuta South LGA in Ogun State. Later on, her family returned to Nigeria when she was just two years old. Asa then grew up in Lagos until she returned to France when she was 20. Asa has three brothers and is the only female child in the family.

Asa while growing up was influenced by the music collection her father played. He had these collections from practising as a cinematographer. His collections consisted of American, African, and Nigerian soul classics by artists such as Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Aretha Franklin, King Sunny Ade, Diana Ross, Miriam Makeba, and Nina Simone.
When she returned to France at the age of 20, she went straight to study at the IMFP school of Jazz Music. Her teachers in the school told her that she should go ahead with becoming a recording artist because she was already good without schooling. And at the time, her first single; Eyé Adaba which she released when she was still in Nigeria was already having airplay.
In 2004, Asa met Janet Nwose who later on introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo. Later on, she signed to Naïve Records. She then went on to partner with Cobhams to produce her first studio album, Asa (Asha). Christophe Dupouy and Benjamin Constant were also involved in the process. The album Asa (Asha) went far across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Asa (Asha) also went on to win the prestigious French Constantin Award in 2008 when she was voted as Best Fresh Talent of 10 singers or groups by a jury of 19 music-industry specialists in Paris.
On her second album, Beautiful Imperfection, she collaborated with French composer, Nicolas Mollard. It was released on the 25th of October 2010 and it went platinum in 2011. By 2014, she had sold up to 400,000 albums worldwide.
Severally after then, she released a number of singles and albums that had also broken records. And again in 2022, she released another album, “V” where she featured Wizkid, Cavemen and Amaarae.
