Algerian deportees to new caledonia

A very specific and interesting topic!

From 1865 to 1962, France deported thousands of Algerians to New Caledonia, a French territory in the Pacific Ocean. This practice was part of the French colonial policy of "assimilation" and "civilization," which aimed to assimilate indigenous populations into French culture and society.

The deportations were carried out for various reasons, including:

  1. Resistance to French colonization: Many Algerians resisted French colonization, and those who were caught or suspected of being involved in the resistance were deported to New Caledonia.
  2. Repression of the Kabyle uprising: In 1871, the Kabyle people, a Berber ethnic group in Algeria, rose up against French colonial rule. The French responded with brutal force, and many Kabyles were deported to New Caledonia.
  3. Forced labor: The French needed laborers to work on plantations and in mines in New Caledonia. They forcibly deported thousands of Algerians to meet this demand.
  4. Social and economic control: Deporting Algerians to New Caledonia allowed the French to maintain social and economic control over the indigenous population in Algeria, while also exploiting the labor of the deportees in New Caledonia.

The deportations had a profound impact on the lives of the Algerians who were sent to New Caledonia. Many were forced to leave their families and communities behind, and they faced harsh conditions, including poverty, disease, and cultural isolation.

Estimates suggest that between 1865 and 1962, around 20,000 to 30,000 Algerians were deported to New Caledonia. Today, there are still descendants of these deportees living in New Caledonia, and efforts are being made to recognize and honor their history and experiences.

In recent years, there have been calls for France to apologize for its colonial past and to provide reparations to the descendants of the deportees. In 2019, the French government officially recognized the deportations as a "crime against humanity" and established a fund to provide compensation to the descendants of the deportees.
