Al Ahly have lost their first major trophy since the departure of Pitso Mosimane in June, and interestingly, they lost the Cup to arch-rivals Zamalek.

The two Egyptian giants met in the Egypt Cup final on Thursday night, and all eyes were on Al Ahly to see how they’d perform without Mosimane.

Mosimane won the same trophy last season, and that alone put Al Ahly’s new technical team under immense pressure to emulate him.

But it wasn’t be as Zamalek beat them 2-1 on the night to secure their 28th Egypt Cup, much to the disappointment of Al Ahly fans.

Interestingly, Mosimane never lost to Zamalek in the four matches against them as Al Ahly coach – he won three and drew one.

HOW AL AHLY LOST EGYPT CUP FINAL TO ZAMALEK

Al Ahly were without South African attacker Percy Tau who injured himself in June, and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Red Devils found themselves on the back foot after the first 45 minutes as they were trailing Zamalek 2-0 at half-time.

Zizo opened the scoring for Zamalek six minutes into the encounter before Emam Ashour doubled his side’s lead on the half-hour mark.

Al Ahly did reduce the deficit through Hossam Hassan in the 65th minute but that proved to be a consolation goal for the Club of the Century.
