Here are five South African players the Super Eagles have to be wary of in their AFCON clash.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria take on the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a group E 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification encounter. The two countries are neck and neck in the qualification race for the competition with just two points separating the two sides.
The Super Eagles will be aiming to avenge their opening day defeat to the Bafana Bafana and book a ticket in Cameroon but will have to be wary of the following stars. Here are five players they will have to watch out for:
1. Percy Tau
With Tokelo Rantie out of the game, the goalscoring responsibility for the Bafana Bafana lies on Percy Tau.
The 24-year-old who plays in Belgium for Union SG was among the goalscorers when South Africa beat Nigeria 2-0 in Uyo.
He carries a goal threat and was on target when South Africa beat Seychelles 6-0 and can be a headache for the Super Eagles defence.
2. Itumelong Khune
If the Super Eagles will be victorious at the FNB Stadium, they will have to put the ball through Itumelong Khune who is expected to be in goal.
Khune who is now 32-years-old is among the most experienced players in the team and is expected to lead the team as he has 89 caps for the national team.
He was part of the team that knocked Nigeria out in the qualification race for the 2015 AFCON with a 2-2 draw and will be motivating the younger ones.
3. Dino Ndlovu
Dino Ndlovu is one of the most experienced players in the squad at 28-years-old and is expected to be a threat in the attack against Nigeria.
He plays for Chinese Division two side Zhejiang Greentown and showed his goalscoring prowess contributing 19 goals in 24 league appearances this season.
He may be selected to lead the South African attack along with Percy or coming off the bench as a threat.
4. Thulani Hlatshwayo
Thulani Hlatshwayo is the current captain of the South African national team and home club Bidvest Wits.
Now 28-years-old, the centre back has provided the shield for Khune over the course of their careers and came through the youth ranks.
He is revered as a top defender and is expected to be a headache for Nigeria’s attack with his physicality especially with Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo out injured.
5. Lebo Mothiba
Lebo Mothiba Is one of the young crop of players of the Bafana Bafana that have decided to continue their development in Europe.
At just 22-years-old he plays for French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg and has scored three goals in four games for the senior team.
Even former Bafana Bafana coach Alex Heredia stated the Super Eagles will be afraid of him as he definitely poses a huge threat.
