Mumbai was full of excitement as Canadian pop star, Justin Bieber came to town for his first concert in India for 45,000 fans to watch on Wednesday.
Fans around India have trooped to the commercial city to watch their idol perform hit songs “Baby” and “Sorry” on his recent “Purpose World Tour”.
“I’ve been listening to his music for five years. I absolutely love him as an artist and I’m very excited to be seeing him,” 18-year-old student Rahul Tiwari, from neighbouring Gujarat state, said.
Fans were at Mumbai’s airport to have a first glimpse of the superstar on arrival at 1:30 am on a chartered flight from Dubai.
Indian television channels were also on hand to celebrate Bieber, as they broadcast his mobile phone footage holding a bouquet of flowers and wearing a pink hoodie, dark shorts and white trainers at the airport to a waiting car with his associates.
The 23-year-old is billed to showcase for a sellout crowd at the D Y Patil Stadium, an unusual venue primarily used for hosting cricket and football matches than for musical performances.
“I’m a big Belieber. He’s attractive and makes peppy, catchy music for our generation,” said a 16-year-old Rhea Asrani, who also bought a ticket for the star performance.
“I have two huge posters of Justin in my bedroom and I listen to him often. I’m excited for the concert but more so just to see him live on stage,” she said.
Newspaper report confirmed Bieber is expected to start off the show by 8:00pm, which was to run for an hour and a half.
India media have already touted the singer’s movement while in the country, suggesting Bollywood stars may or may not attend the show.
